just hearing how it's possible for someone to find a location from a phonepic posted online. How can they do that?

The GPS data is written to EXIF tags by the phone. It can be turned off on the phone if someone wants that. It's just plain latitude, longitude, and altitude.

too bad more people aren't aware of that when they put their kids pictures online

Bookface strips all of the metadata when photos are uploaded.
